Our rolling farm land borders the North Eastern shores of Red Deer Lake near Ferintosh, Alberta, where we have lived since 1984. Parts of our land have been in our family for several generations and bordering lands even longer. In 1988 we began using organic principles to guide our management practices and since then we have farmed without the use of synthetic/chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides. Today, we continue that tradition.
The majority of our land is planted to a mixture of alfalfa, timothy and an assortment of native grasses which we harvest each year for high quality animal fodder in the form of small square bales. A small acreage is planted to cereal crops each year to facilitate the rejuvenation of our hay fields and to provide grain for our free range chickens and heritage hogs. We also have a closed herd of pastured beef which, along with the other animals, are an integral part of our land management and the fertility cycle of our farm.
